Weight Loss Without Dieting? One of the biggest barriers to weight loss has been following a strict diet plan. This was especially true when different members of the family were on different diets or worse yet, no diet. However, recent discoveries have led our entire family to healthy lifestyle changes and weight loss! Believe me, I have tried about every diet out there and have not had much success. In fact, I gained back the weight and more when I went off the diet! How frustrating is that! The problems with most diets is that you deprive yourself of foods that you crave and you feel like you are punishing yourself to lose the weight. Once the diet is over you go back to the way you were eating and you put the weight back on. It is normal to even add additional pounds and your weight loss becomes your weight gain! The secret is not a diet but a healthy lifestyle change. It is the way you approach you whole meal planning. It is not depriving yourself of foods but giving yourself healthy alternatives. It is a totally different way of looking at eating. Once you see how great you feel by making healthy lifestyle changes, you want to keep it up. You plan your meals differently. You shop differently. I must admit that medical reasons forced us into a healthy lifestyle change. It was hard at first! I was in panic mode as I had to rethink how I planned our meals. It took a lot of time and effort to shop and cook! After awhile, the process became our routine. Everyone has lost weight and is feeling great. This is motivation for me to stick with it. For the first time in twenty years, I have been able to lose weight! Exercise is Vital to Healthy Weight Loss

Love it or hate it, exercise is vital to healthy weight loss! We have been on this “healthy lifestyle” for five months! It is hard to believe! For the first time in fifteen years I have been able to lose weight! That certainlywasn’t the motivation behind this lifestyle change, but an encouraging benefit. My son has lost close to 50 pounds! He is looking great! But, he has beenhaving trouble getting started with exercise. In comes a young man who seesthe need and takes it upon himself to train our son. You would think that such an opportunity would be recognized and appreciated. Although he is not enthusiastic, he is responding by doing the workouts. Although he is very sore, I know that in 30 days he will see the benefits! (He wants to continue to lose weight and I know that exercise is vital to healthy weight loss.) His trainer asked if he could use my heart rate monitor. Exercise has been a part of my life since I was a kid. Back in the ‘olden days’ we played outdoors regularly and when I started school, I was in every sport offered to girls. Even after college, I still played tennis, raquetball and softball. When my kids were young, I used to swim a mile early in the morning. That was great exercise!There was a swim coach in town who put together different workouts which were great training. This was the first time I started using a heart rate monitor. It was great for increasing cardio training levels and helping me reach my fitness goals. My coach was instrumental in determing my target heart rate range. These heart rate monitors are fitness essentials that are extremely effective when it comes to providing you with the best results in the shortest period of time. Here is how you can use one: The beats per minute of your heart, or “heart rate” can be useful for guaging the intensity of a workout. Most heart rate monitoring devices allow you to set up at least one target heart rate zone. You can push it to be the best that you can be, all while in your target heart rate range. You decide what your heart rate will be for a given workout and then watch your monitor to make sure you reach it. It’s quite simple. Want to get faster? Train with higher heart rates to build speed. Want to go farther? Train with lower heart rates to develop endurance. Back to my story. I used a couple different heart rate monitors over a ten year period. My two favorite were Polar and Omron.  The unit last for a long time but constant exposure to chlorine caused the chest strap to decompose. So naturally I looked at these two first when looking for a monitor for my son. What is the Paleo Diet?

What is the Paleo Diet? The term ‘paleo’ comes from the term: ‘paleolithic.’  For those of us who don’t remember all the different eras, the paleolithic era ended when man began to cultivate crops. The idea being that man consumed primarily wild plants and animals until the end of the paleolithic time.  Some other terms for the paleo diet have been: Stone Age diet or caveman diet or hunter-gatherer diet. What foods does the Paleo diet include? Meat Fish Vegetables Fruits Roots Nuts The caveman diet therefore is primarily any food that can be hunted, fished or gathered.  Since modern man has domesticated animals, paleo proponents have acquiesed to accepting meat from a variety of sources. It is recommended that you stick with lean sources of meats that are anit-biotic free and hormone free.  The best meat comes from wild game or grass feed animals. (NOTE: These types of animals have higher level of Omega 3 in their meat.) Other foods that can be gathered are: insects, seeds, mushrooms, herbs, spices and eggs. (In addition to the list mentioned above.) What does the Paleo diet exclude? Foods that are not Paleo… Grains Dairy Salt Refined sugar Process oils* NOTE: * Some advocates do see the need for need for Omega-3 and Omega-6 which properly processed oils can provide.  Some allow olive oil and canola oil.  I only recommend olive oil. You should not drink coffee, colas, juices, alcohol or such. Should the Paleo Diet be a part of your healthy diet plan? Here are some pro’s: The Paleo Diet advocates animal food and plant food – good choices Eating raw vegetables is great for you and very few people eat enough vegetables. Staying off sugars and starches is very good. Here are some con’s: You should strive to get at least 6 servings a day from raw vegetables.  If yo have 10 servings a day, 6 should be vegetables, 3 should be meats, 1 should be carbohydrates.  The ratio in the paleo diet is a bit off. Paleo recommends 55-65% intake from animals and 35-45% from plants. You need to know your vegetables, seeds and roots to avoid ones that affect the thyroid. NO whole grains is a bit extreme. Brown rice and quinoa are two whole grains that provide protein, fiber and energy.  Although I advocate very little in your diet, they should not be excluded. Common sense tells you you  that eating less processed foods is good for you.  However, whole grains should also be a part of your diet unless you are testing for allergic sensitivities. Lose Weight – Side Benefit

Lose Weight with Going Gluten Free, Soy Free, Dairy Free! Lose weight while helping my kids with their allergies!?! When I first found out that my two teens had significant food allergies, I was totally overwhelmed!  How do you totally change your lifestyle overnight? Long story short, we went into this cold turkey. (The only thing I couldn’t quit right away was my coffee!  I loved my morning coffee!) The first two weeks were brutal! What do you fix? What do you buy? I had to take my lists of allowable foods and forbidden foods every time I went to the store. If you find yourself in this situation, relax, it does get easier. We have been on this ‘lifestyle’ for 4 weeks and we are slowly getting into a routine.  It has been worthwhile because my son has seen some relief from his headaches. BUT another great side benefit for me – I am starting to lose weight!  I have tried on and off over the last 10 years to lose weight and have not had a lot of success.   Just 4 weeks on our gf, df, sf diet I have lost about 8 pounds! This is great! This has been an overall improvement to the health of the whole family! More later…. While Weighing less!
